Year R went to the library

Year R pupils enjoyed a wonderful visit to Locks wood library, where they took an exciting step towards becoming independent readers and active members of our community.

During their visit, the children:

  • Walked all the way to the library very sensibly and spotted the signs of spring along the way
  • Signed up for their own library cards and borrowed books to take home – a fantastic milestone in their reading journey
  • Met Ellie, the librarian, who warmly welcomed them and read them a delightful story about OttoBear

  • Completed a fun treasure hunt, searching for bears hidden around the library, which helped them explore the different areas and learn how the library is organised

Why this visit matters

This visit supports our pupils' development in several important ways:

Building community connections – By signing up for library cards and meeting local library staff, our youngest pupils are learning about the valuable resources available in their community and developing a sense of belonging beyond the school gates.

Fostering a love of reading – Early positive experiences with books and libraries help children develop into confident, enthusiastic readers. Taking home their own chosen books gives them ownership of their reading journey.

Developing independence – The children learnt how to borrow and return books, building life skills they'll use for years to come.

Making learning fun – The treasure hunt made the visit engaging and memorable, helping children feel comfortable and excited about visiting the library again.

What's next?

We encourage all families to visit the library together during the holidays or weekends. The children are excited to show you what they've learnt and choose new books to enjoy at home.

A huge thank you to Ellie and the library team for making our Year R pupils feel so welcome!
